Applied English Center at KU welcomes new director, Pamela Pearson

LAWRENCE — Pamela Pearson began her role this week as director of the University of Kansas Applied English Center, bringing more than two decades of experience in English language instruction and international education.

She most recently served as associate director of Programs for Learning Academic and Community English (PLACE) at Colorado State University, where she oversaw intensive English curriculum development, accreditation, and student support. Pearson brings extensive experience in English language instruction, program administration, and international education

At KU, Pearson will lead the AEC in advancing its mission to provide high-quality English language instruction to international students preparing for academic study, as well as those engaged in short-term or specialized learning programs. A leader in its field, the AEC became a founding member of the prestigious Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs in 1967 and, in 2002, was also among the earliest programs to receive recognition from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. In addition to serving as a gateway to KU for undergrad and grad students, the AEC provides intercultural communication training for KU offices and offers tailored workshops and skill-building courses in areas such as research writing and pronunciation for academic departments.

“Pearson’s deep expertise in applied linguistics, curriculum design, and global engagement makes her an outstanding addition to KU,” said Associate Vice Provost for Student Support & Academic Services Roberta Pokphanh, leader of the director search. “Her leadership will further strengthen the AEC’s impact across campus and beyond.”

Pearson holds a doctorate in applied linguistics from Georgia State University, a master’s in teaching (secondary education) from Drake University, a master’s in teaching English as a second language from Iowa State, and a bachelor’s from Central College. She has taught in both linguistics and English language programs Linfield College, Georgia State, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and Iowa State, and at institutions in Djibouti, Mexico, and Japan. She has received awards for teaching and advising, as well as a Fulbright research grant to Rwanda.
