Phi Beta Delta Best Graduate Student Paper on an International Topic

Phi Beta Delta hosts a competition for the Best Graduate Student Paper on an International Topic to recognize the international work of KU graduate students.  Papers must deal with an international topic and use international sources. Papers will be judged in two categories (see below). The top paper in each category will receive a $50 award, made possible by the Office of Graduate Studies. Students from master's and doctoral programs from any discipline are encouraged to apply. Please submit to pbd@ku.edu by the specified deadline to be considered.

The 2019 Deadline will be announced in November 2018.

1) Research Paper from a Course

           Papers must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have been written in 2018
  • Must be written by a single author 

  • Must be 15-20 pages (double-spaced) in length, not including bibliography
  • Citations should be in APA, MLA, or Chicago style
  • One submission per participant 


2) Dissertation Chapter or Conference Presentation

           Papers must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have been written in 2018
  • Chapter or presentation must be written by a single author 

  • Citations should be in APA, MLA, or Chicago style 

  • One submission per participant

Eligibility

Current KU graduate students, especially PBD members, are eligible to submit one paper.

Submission should include the following: 


  • A paper, including full citations, in PDF format 

  • A separate abstract 

  • A cover letter stating the following:
    • that this is a submission for the PBD graduate 
student contest
    • the nominee's name
    • nominee's e-mail address
    • nominee's departmental affiliation
    • the nominee's PBD membership status
    • the name of class the paper was written for, if applicable
    • the name of instructor of that class, if applicable
    • submission category

Papers will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality 

  • Quality and thoroughness of the research and its presentation 

  • Writing quality/appropriate use of sources 

  • International studies value: enhances PBD’s mission, contribution to the field
